Rissa Niyobuhungiro, a PhD student in the Environment and Process Systems Unit in the Department of Chemical Engineering, received a Best Student Poster award at the 5th International Conference on Engineering for Waste and Biomass Valorisation, which was held in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The conference theme was in line with Rissa’s research, which aims to find alternative clean and cheap fuels for poor vendors in information settlements.
In 2010 Rissa received a Fellowship from the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD). Since 2012, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency has provided additional funding to OWSD Fellows to enable them to attend international conferences relevant to their field of research, or to undertake short research visits in other countries, where they can have access to laboratories, equipment and expertise not available in their home countries.
